Leelanau Conservancy is with Mark Smith.
Tuesday September 8th, 2020 - 7:53 pm
Did you know…that the Leelanau Conservancy has worked with over 180 landowners to protect nearly 12,000 acres of private lands—including farms. Protected private lands are not owned by the Conservancy, and they are not open to the public for hiking, hunting or exploring. But even though the public can’t access these incredible places, we all benefit from their protection. The views, wildlife and water quality we all enjoy are the direct result of private lands protected with a tool called a conservation easement. Generations of a family led by a strong patriarch clash over the future of a treasured Canadian vacation home. The local Ojibwe chief threatens to claim the land. And a pristine but foreboding lake north of Lake Huron is an omnipresent part of the drama. That’s the setting for "The Best Part of Us" the debut novel by former international Great Lakes executive, Sally Cole-Misch. A self-described “environmental communicator,” Cole-Misch is a former public affairs officer with the International Joint Commission, the U.S. and Canadian agency that advises the two countries on trans-border water issues, including the Great Lakes. Published by She Writes Press, "The Best Part of Us" is being released today, Sept. 8. Click on the article for links to join either of the two sessions on wastewater impacts (EGLE will hold the same meeting twice on different dates) and either of two sessions on wetland impacts (EGLE will hold the same meeting twice on different dates). After those info sessions are completed, EGLE then will host four online public hearings—including public comment—on the proposed oil pipeline tunnel's expected wastewater and wetlands impacts. Gracias to Otwell Hub members, Casey, Marissa, and Caden Moore. We are so grateful for your family!
"When we relocated to Traverse City from Austin, TX a year ago, we had no idea how much Norte would impact our lives. Norte is an integral part of our local community and it embodies the values that make this region of Michigan so special: opting to get outside, staying active, being curious, adventuring, diversity and inclusion. After attending his first summer camp at Norte in 2019, our son Caden biked to school every day at his first year at Eastern Elementary and continued riding with Norte's Fall Farm Team. This organization is hyper-focused on the quality of life in our town – from ensuring we have safe paths to travel by bike and on foot, to creating an inclusive environment for our youth to gain confidence to ride safely and be a part of something that extends beyond riding bikes." - Casey and Marissa Moore

Tipsey Tuesday's Tip...tinted furniture oil is a great way to bring back vintage wood furniture! The legs of this piece of furniture were a bit scuffed up, but still in relatively good shape...a couple coates of the furniture oil & viola, looks nearly new again!😍 FYI, this process can be a bit messy, it's difficult to get the tinted furniture oil out from under your fingernails!😕 Wearing gloves is a good idea!

GREAT LAKES COASTLINE SURVEY INITIATIVE
BEACH WRECKAGE RECORDING FORM:
www.miplace.org/49d89a/globalassets/documents/shpo/programs-and-services/archaeology/crm-and-rese...
The shorelines of the Great Lakes around Michigan are considerably more eroded than in recent decades because of record high lake water levels. Consequently, cultural materials
including shipwrecks, parts of historic vessels, artifacts, abandoned docks, pilings, maritime landscapes, and prehistoric objects that had been buried in sediments or located in shallow water, are now exposed. The objects are now more accessible to researchers but are also more susceptible to natural deterioration and human activities.
As the lakes continue to rise, brief windows of opportunity exist to locate and archaeologically document these shoreline features. Citizen scientists and volunteers now have the ability to assist the State of Michigan in surveying its Great Lakes coastlines with the objective of locating the positions of cultural materials, photographing and recording preliminary observations of exposed materials, and compiling collected data for further assessment and public dissemination.

Northern White Cedar is one of the five most common trees in Michigan. The Anishinaabe regard the cedar as an important ceremonial plant and one of the four sacred medicinal trees. Cedar is also known as Arborvitae, which translates into “tree of life”. A group of early (1535) French voyageurs traveling to America became sick with scurvy after spending months at sea. Luckily for the voyageurs, the Anishinaabe came to their rescue by making a Vitamin-C rich tea using cedar leaves, saving their lives.
