World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Joshua Weilerstein, cond.; Zuill Bailey, cello – Interlochen Arts Festival – July 24, 2016
In their fourth performance of the 2016 season, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra welcomes not one, but two special guests: Conductor Joshua Weilerstein and cellist Zuill Bailey. Under Weilerstein’s direction, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra will accompany Bailey as he performs Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto. WYSO’s fourth concert will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.
Joshua Weilerstein is currently the artistic director of Switzerland’s Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. Weilerstein has a passion for introducing new audiences to the orchestra and establishing strong connections between performer and audience. Weilerstein’s many accolades include first prize in the Malko Competition for Young Conductors, a three-year appointment as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and guest appearances with several major symphony orchestras, including Baltimore, Dallas and Vancouver. Weilerstein enjoys engaging with audiences about music and encourages them to follow him on social media.
Zuill Bailey, an Interlochen alumnus (IAC 87-88), is one of the world’s premier cello soloists. Noted for his artistry, technical prowess and engaging personality, Bailey is in high demand as a soloist and has performed with symphony orchestras around the world. Bailey has premiered works by composers such as Lowell Lieberman, Philip Lasser and Roberto Sierra, produced many critically-acclaimed albums and even appeared on the HBO series Oz . Bailey is also the artistic director of El Paso Pro-Musica and Professor of Cello at the University of Texas El Paso.
